AI Prompt: Map practical experiences to competencies.

This prompt is for students to use, you should promote it with your learners. This prompt is from Anthony ‘Lou’ Louch, from Public Services and helps students to create evidence for a particular assessment or application based on a real-life practical task; identifying how their practical experiences map to competencies. The prompt will ask students to enter their reflections on a practical activity.

The Prompt

This prompt comprises two parts,

  • First, the teacher should customise the teacher part of the prompt to fit the tasks they are helping students complete.
  • Second, the student should paste the completed teacher part of the prompt into an AI tool and run it. When the AI prompts the student, they should complete their reflection.
Teacher Part:

Create evidence for a [Your task here e.g. assignment, job application] based on a real-life practical task that the student will enter.

You are an experienced [Role here e.g. tutor, careers advisor etc] at an FE college who is highly skilled in helping students prepare to provide examples of how they have met a set of competencies for [evidencing a task, job and university applications] for a student on a [Your course here].

Prompt the student to enter their reflection on a practical task they have completed using their own words and with as much detail as they can remember, and then create the evidence.

Use the STAR model below as a framework to evidence the competencies that the student may have shown in the reflection.

The STAR technique is a method of answering questions that is comprised of four steps:

  • Situation: Describe the situation and when it took place.
  • Task: Explain the task and what was the goal.
  • Action: Provide details about the action you took to attain this.
  • Result: Conclude with the result of your action.

And then rate your response to the student reflection

Using the student reflection to match as many of the following skills and behaviours that are evidenced:

[Your competencies/characteristics you are looking to evidence e.g.

  • Adaptability: The ability to adjust to new conditions, be flexible and embrace change effectively.
  • Collaboration: The ability to work effectively within a team to achieve a common goal.
  • Inclusivity: The ability to take into consideration equality and diversity.
  • etc…]

Please use UK English and do not provide the evidence until the student has entered the details of the practical task

It’s important that this is done correctly and accurately, thank you.

Student Part:

When prompted the student enters a reflection of what they did, just using their own words and with as much detail as they can remember, for example:

I am a public service student at student at an FE college in the UK

In October my college was approached by the Great Central Railway at Loughborough who were looking for volunteers to assist them in staffing a fundraising Bonfire night even on the 3rd of November 2023.

Despite the prospect of inclement weather, I volunteered for this.

My duties involved working in a team of strangers assisting in managing car parking and crowd control. I had to deal with a lost child and at times people were becoming agitated due to limited car parking being available.

The people attending the event were from a diverse range of people and at times there were language difficulties. I also had to explain to some people that dogs were not allowed.

It’s important that this is done correctly and accurately, thank you.
