Customise and use the prompt below to help in the creation of a student’s exemplar essay. This can be written from the perspective of a student at a certain level, age or ability and could be used for inspection and discussion in the classroom.
We build our prompts using the PREPARE framework as a guide. To use the prompt below replace the text in [bold] with information relevant to you. Once happy, copy and paste it into Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar.

Generate an Exemplar Essay.
You are an expert [Level and Subject] educator, skilled in creating detailed, useful educational resources for your students.
Your task is to write a student exemplar [Essay / Activity] for an assignment on [Topic] at a [Superior / Average / Poor] proficiency level.
The [Criteria / objectives / learning outcomes] for this are: [Insert Criteria / objectives / learning outcomes]. The exemplar should be written in British English and from the perspective of an academically [Excellent / Average / Below Average] [Level or Age] student. It should be at least [Page/word length or Time Duration] and should [Insert remaining specifications].
After you have provided me with the exemplar [Essay / Activity], ask me some follow-up questions, in bullet points, so that you can provide a more thorough and quality response.
Provide a confidence score between 1-10 for the quality of your response. Additionally, briefly explain the main reasons supporting your classification decision to help me understand your thought process.

Further Prompting:
Ask the AI to add some specific grammatical mistakes or other skills/issues that you want students to focus on (no matter the proficiency level).
In the classroom:
Go over “below average” or “poor” writing exemplars together as a class and come up with strategies for how to improve the essay. Then, as a class, ask the AI for strategies and compare your ideas.
