{"id":8442,"date":"2024-02-22T14:02:26","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T14:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/?p=8442"},"modified":"2024-02-26T11:31:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T11:31:20","slug":"troubleshoot-your-turnitin-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/2024\/02\/22\/troubleshoot-your-turnitin-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Troubleshoot Your Turnitin Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this blog, we will look at some issues teachers often run into with Turnitin that can mostly be easily fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two most frequent issues staff log with us are when they can&#8217;t access student work for marking, and when students can&#8217;t submit to a Turnitin submission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below we will explore why these errors happen, and how you may be able to troubleshoot your issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Post Date<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Post Date indicates when the grades and feedback will be released to students. Once the Post Date has passed, students will no longer be able to submit work and staff will no longer be able to mark submissions, so it should be the first thing to check when troubleshooting all issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"138\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-4.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of Turnitin Submission Dates showing Part 1 the title, start date, due date and post date, marks available and Export\" class=\"wp-image-8503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-4.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-4-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-4-768x104.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Found alongside the &#8216;Start Date&#8217; and &#8216;Due Date&#8217; on the Submissions page, resetting a Post Date that has passed will usually fix these issues. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"519\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-5.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of a Turnitin submission Read Only warning pop up\" class=\"wp-image-8508\" style=\"width:380px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-5.png 519w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image-5-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;I can&#8217;t mark any submissions&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> &#8211;  If you see the Read Only pop-up message, the submission is locked and you will need to adjust the Post Date to one in the future before continuing to mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;Students can&#8217;t see my feedback and grade&#8221;<\/em> <\/strong>&#8211; Feedback won&#8217;t be available to students until the Post Date has passed. If you want to release the feedback for students you will need to change the date to a time that has already passed. Students will then be able to see their grades and feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>File Types<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Another common issue is students uploading submissions not in an accepted file type and size. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;The Similarity Report says pending&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>&#8220;The AI Report <\/em>is greyed out<em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong> <br>These errors are usually due to the file type not being supported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For similarity and AI checks, Turnitin requires files to be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>less than 100MB<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A minimum of 20 words (unless the assignment settings state otherwise)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less than 800 pages (.xls\/.xlsx and .csv files must be less than 450 pages)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It will also need to be one of the accepted file types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Microsoft Word\u00ae (.doc\/.docx)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excel (XLS, XLSX)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PowerPoint (ppt, pptx, pps, ppsx)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PDF<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HTML<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rich text format (.rtf)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plain text (.txt)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*<strong>Note<\/strong> PowerPoint (ppt, pptx, pps, ppsx) files are not currently supported for AI reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Your-Session-Has-Expired.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"647\" height=\"250\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Your-Session-Has-Expired.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of a Turnitin pop up Error 'Your Session Has Expired' This paper is not available. M14:18.\" class=\"wp-image-8461\" style=\"width:460px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Your-Session-Has-Expired.png 647w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Your-Session-Has-Expired-300x116.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 647px) 100vw, 647px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;I can&#8217;t mark my students&#8217; work, I&#8217;m just getting an error&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>  <br>If the student managed to submit a file and you are trying to mark the submission but getting one of the shown errors, you can try and download the file itself by selecting the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"56\" height=\"48\" class=\"wp-image-8482\" style=\"width:25px;height:auto\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"Download Submission Icon from Turnitin\">&#8216;Download Submission&#8217; button. This can be found to the right of the submission itself in the &#8216;Submission Inbox&#8217;. This can be due to internet connectivity, file type, size, or when the Post Date has passed. This prevents students from resubmitting because Turnitin thinks a file has been submitted already.  The teacher will need to delete this failed submission, and then ask the student to resubmit their work. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out more about file types on <a href=\"https:\/\/help.turnitin.com\/feedback-studio\/turnitin-website\/student\/submitting-a-paper\/file-requirements.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turnitin&#8217;s file requirements help page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turnitin Settings <\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top\" style=\"grid-template-columns:24% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"307\" height=\"227\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Submission-Types.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8481 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Submission-Types.png 307w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Turnitin-Submission-Types-300x222.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;The Similarity Report is not showing for students&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> <br>There could be a few different reasons the Similarity Report wouldn&#8217;t show up for students. In the Turnitin setting page make sure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check that the &#8216;Submission Type&#8217; is set to &#8216;File Upload&#8217; and <strong>not <\/strong>&#8216;Any Submission Type&#8217;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the &#8216;Display Similarity Reports to Students&#8217; to &#8216;Yes&#8217;. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the &#8216;Generation Speed&#8217; appropriately, we recommend setting this to &#8216;Generate Reports Immediately&#8217; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your &#8216;Similarity Report Options&#8217; are set correctly. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Any of these settings if incorrect can prevent a report from being generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*<strong>Note <\/strong>that currently AI reports cannot be made available to students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other Issues<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m getting an error while trying to create a Turnitin&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> <br>Some staff have reported seeing the below error when trying to create a new Turnitin on a LearnZone Course page.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"137\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-1024x137.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of an error while trying to create a Turnitin submission link on LearnZone\" class=\"wp-image-8459\" style=\"width:814px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-1024x137.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-768x103.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-1536x206.png 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link-1440x193.png 1440w, https:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2024\/02\/Error-when-trying-to-create-a-Turnitin-link.png 1708w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue has to do with the fact a &#8216;Course End Date&#8217; has been enabled on the LearnZone course page and is set to a date in the past. To fix this go to the &#8216;Cog&#8217; in the top right corner of the course page and select &#8216;Settings&#8217; under &#8216;Course Administration&#8217; at the top of the drop-down menu. Scroll the &#8216;Edit Course Settings&#8217; page until you find the &#8216;Course End Date&#8217; and check if it is set to a date in the future or if the &#8216;Enable&#8217; icon is deselected. Once done, select &#8216;Save and Display&#8217; at the bottom of the settings. You should now be able to create Turnitins again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;I have deleted a submission what can I do?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><br>Unfortunately, if a submission is accidentally deleted there isn&#8217;t a way to get this back.
