During CPD week and conference, we ran 2 sessions to provide guidance to encourage staff to embrace AI into their working practice and policy to ensure we meet the college&#8217;s responsibilities to staff and learners. The new policy can be found below along with the CPD session run by Dan Vaughan and the conference session by the excellent Ben Whitaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons alignwide is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-align-center wp-element-button\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.loucoll.ac.uk\/learningtechnology\/files\/2023\/08\/EX-P018-v1.0-Artificial-Intelligence-Staff-Fair-and-Ethical-Use-Policy-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence Staff Fair and Ethical Use policy<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is AI?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Oxford Dictionary AI is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The capacity of computers or other machines&nbsp;to exhibit or&nbsp;simulate intelligent&nbsp;behaviour<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is one specific form of AI that has been hitting the headlines as having the most impact on the education sector: Generative AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generative AI, or generative artificial intelligence, is&nbsp;<strong>a form of machine learning that is able to produce text, video, images, and other types of content<\/strong>. ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Bard are examples of generative AI applications that produce text or images based on user-given prompts or dialogue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why should we embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI)?\u200b<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;It is&nbsp;difficult to think of an industry that AI&nbsp;will not&nbsp;transform.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u200b<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Andrew Ng &#8211; Cofounder and Head of&nbsp;Google Brain<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If Andrew Ng is right we as educators will need to embrace AI as part of the learning process to prepare our learners for their chosen destinations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video below Ben Whitaker outlines how he feels generative AI will impact the education sector in his conference talk &#8211; <strong>AI In Education<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ben Whitaker - The AI Educator\" width=\"439\" height=\"247\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A9YbP5FwP6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ben&#8217;s video, he outlines Dan Fitzpatrick&#8217;s two-step process, PREP and EDIT, to get the most from Chatgpt. The full process can be found in Dan&#8217;s book The AI Classroom, available in the library. Let&#8217;s take a quick glance at his process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#437d77\">First, <strong>PREP<\/strong> the Machine<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter is-style-stripes has-normal-font-size\"><table class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#437d77\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>P<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Prompt<\/strong><\/em><br>Introduce the question with a prompt<\/td><td><strong>R<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Role<\/strong><\/em><br>Give it a role or voice<\/td><td><strong>E<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Explicit<\/strong><\/em><br>Be explicit in your instructions<\/td><td><strong>P<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Parameters<\/strong><\/em><br>Set the parameters of the answer<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#437d77\">Then, <strong>EDIT <\/strong>the output.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#437d77\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>E<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Evaluate<\/strong><\/em><br>Evaluate your AI output content for language, facts, and structure<\/td><td><strong>D<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Determine<\/strong><\/em><br>Determine accuracy and corroborate with source.<\/td><td><strong>I<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Identify<\/strong><\/em><br>Identify biasses and misinformation<\/td><td><strong>T<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><em><strong>Transform<\/strong><\/em><br>Transform content to reflect adjustments and new findings<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here is an example:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>P<\/strong> = Create a lesson&nbsp;plan\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R<\/strong>&nbsp;= You&nbsp;are a &#8230; teacher working at a further education&nbsp;college\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> = Create a lesson plan for a lesson for a Level \u2026 course in\u2026 introducing the key principles of \u2026\u200b<br>The lesson will be for 2 hours with 14 learners it should include a variety of activities of differing&nbsp;group sizes. The activities should be varied and move up Bloom\u2019s taxonomy as the lesson progresses&nbsp;to deepen the learning experience.&nbsp;\u200b<br>At least one activity should use a digital or online tool clearly identify the type of tool. Each activity&nbsp;must provide clear observable outcomes and opportunities for sharing with the wider group.
