OLYMPIC STAR NICOLA WHITE GLAD TO BE BACK

    November 29th, 2012

LOUGHBOROUGH COLLEGE’S Olympic bronze medallist Nicola White says she’s delighted to be playing top flight hockey again – and looking forward to a big date for new club Leicester Ladies this weekend.

The 24-year-old, a key part of the Team GB squad which helped put women’s hockey back on the map at London 2012, has now played half-a-dozen games for the Premier League club after her transfer from Slough and says: “I’m not back to full match fitness yet, but I’m enjoying it and the team is going well. It’s brilliant to be with Leicester as we have a good team and I also want to keep my travelling down before the World Cup qualifiers for England in June.

“Currently we’re in second place with a home match against the leaders Canterbury on Saturday. That’s a game we’re all looking forward to.”

Nicola, who has won an amazing 83 caps for England and Great Britain combined, enjoyed a break from the sport after her London 2012 heroics but has been kept busy by attending more than 30 public engagements, including a link up with the British Heart Foundation that has seen her attending events as far apart as Hartlepool and Cornwall. She has also been settling into her new role as a live-in mentor at the College’s Elite Athlete Performance Centre.

One of the special guests at today’s Loughborough Flames: Lighting the Way festival at Loughborough University, she said: “It’s amazing how much fitness you lose by having four weeks off – the pain in my legs now I’m on the way back highlights that. It’s good to be playing again and I’m getting there.

“The World Cup is the next big event on the international front as we look to build on our bronze medal in Argentina in 2010. “
