MELANIE Nocher is pinning SOME of her Olympic homes on this week’s Irish Long Course Swimming Championships which are doubling up as the Olympic trials.
The 23-year-old Loughborough College star has already gone public on her aim of achieving the qualifying time in front of her own supporters – but won’t panic if she falls short.
So far two Irish swimmers have swum qualification times for London – Grainne Murphy in the women’s 800m freestyle and Barry Murphy in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
Fresh from her bronze medal in the European Short Course Championships in Poland in December, Melanie has been training in Loughborough before bidding to achieve the magic mark of 2:10:84 in the 200m backstroke.
She says: “It would be great to get it over and done with. I’m not saying it wouldn’t but if it doesn’t happen, I have plenty of time before the cut off point in June.”
